7th OIE Seminar on Biotechnology

Following what has now become a tradition for the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the 7th OIE Seminar on Biotechnology will be organized jointly with the 12th International Symposium of the World Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (ISWALD) in Montevideo, Uruguay on the 17 November 2005.

The focus of the seminar will be the “Application of biotechnology to zoonotic disease diagnosis” pointing out the tremendous role of veterinary laboratories in diagnostic tests of animal diseases including zoonosis.

Using its global network of over 150 Reference Laboratories and Collaborating Centres, the OIE collects and analyses the latest scientific information on animal disease control methods and issues the related standards and guidelines. Functioning as centres of expertise and standardisation of diagnostic techniques for a designated disease, OIE Reference Laboratories provide scientific and technical assistance and expert advice on topics linked to surveillance and control of 96 OIE listed animal diseases and zoonosis.

Animal disease outbreaks such as those of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy), of FMD (foot and mouth disease) and more recently of HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza) have proven the critical role of the OIE and its network of laboratories in sanitary information and animal disease control methods world wide.
The OIE seminar on the “Application of biotechnology to zoonotic disease diagnosis” represents a unique opportunity to meet highest level experts to address the current issues on animal disease diagnostic methods.
